In this newsletter, we highlight theinsightful event from September 28th, featuring the distinguished Dr. JudyKluge. Her presentation, which focused on case studies surrounding IUDcontraception, provided invaluable insights into this vital field ofhealthcare.
During the presentation, Dr. Kluge reviewedcase studies on intrauterine contraception (IUC), specifically on LNG IUD andCu IUD. The cases discussed included the following:
· Perforation risk, which ishighest in breastfeeding women, with a relative risk six times higher. The riskextends to longer than 36 weeks postpartum.
· A rare case of actinomycosis,which is a chronic bacterial infection. If recurrent pelvic inflammatorydisease (PID) or not improving after 72 hours of antibiotics and with the IUDin situ, actinomyces organisms should be considered.
· Differences in extended use ofMirena for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) versus contraception.
· A rare case of alopeciaassociated with Mirena use. Hair loss has been reported with Mirena in generaland can have an incidence rate of up to 1%.
